Silencing Women
The Femicide in Kenya project explores the alarming rise of violence against women, focusing on data-driven insights into femicide cases across Kenya. The project investigates the circumstances surrounding these killings, identifies demographic patterns, and highlights systemic issues contributing to gender-based violence. By presenting comprehensive data and analysis, the project seeks to raise public awareness, inform policy discussions, and push for stronger protective measures for women.
Task
One significant challenge in the Femicide in Kenya project was the scarcity and inconsistency of reliable data on gender-based violence cases. Many incidents of femicide go unreported or undocumented due to social stigma, fear, and gaps in law enforcement reporting. Overcoming this required collaborating with local organizations, activists, and independent sources to supplement official data, as well as finding ways to handle sensitive information with respect and care. Balancing data integrity with ethical storytelling was crucial to accurately represent the scale and impact of femicide in Kenya.
